The inscription refers to the death of King Kertanagara who, in 1292 (1214 Shaka), became unified with Shiva and Buddha. The inscription was issued by Rakryan Mapatih Mpu Mada (better known as Gajah Mada) who wished to express his feelings of devotion to King Kertanagara and his descendants by renovating a temple (caitya) that had been destroyed.
