Kertanagara according to the Pararaton

If one believes the Pararaton, Kertanagara was especially short-sighted in internal affairs: he appointed an unreliable director in Madura, he replaced an experienced prime minister with a novice and he sent large military expeditions abroad while the domestic situation was unsettled.

In addition, according to the same text, Kertanagara’s behaviour at the end of his reign was not really appropriate for a king. When the armies of his rival attacked Singhasari from the north, Kertanagara did nothing but drink palm wine. And when he was attacked from the south, his reaction was similar.

‘Lord Shiva-Buddha [Kertanagara] was once again drinking palm wine with the minister when they were vanquished; both paid for it with their life’.
